Basic Policy of Personal Data Protection (Summary)

The progress made by the Internet and IT in recent years has been accompanied by growing demands for protection of personal data. Canon Medical Systems Asia Pte Ltd ("Canon Medical Systems", “we”, or “us”) respects personal data and regards protection of the same as both an essential aspect of business and an important social responsibility. This document describes our Privacy Policy for the handling personal data obtained.

Canon Medical Systems allows access to almost all of its services without any need to submit personal data. However, certain services, such as those described below, cannot be used without the provision of personal data.

  • Registration for membership services.
  • Responses to questionnaires.
  • Participation in events such as contests and prize offers.
  • Orders for Canon Medical System’s products, digital content, services, etc.
  • Applications to attend exhibitions, seminars, training sessions, etc.
  • Provision of maintenance services.

In all these examples, personal data is required only to the extent necessary to support customer convenience, to improve the quality of our services, or to offer services that better meet customer needs.

For the purposes of this policy, "personal data" refers to any information, whether true or not, about an individual who can be identified (a) from that data; or (b) from that data and other information to which we have or are likely to have access, and which includes one or any combination of the following: name, age, date of birth, telephone number, e-mail address, street address, place of employment, credit card number, bank account details, and details of inquiries to us.

(1) Key Principles

Our basic Privacy Policy relys on three key principles.

1) Specification of use

Whenever Canon Medical Systems asks for personal data, the purposes for which it will be used are specified in this Privacy Policy, and use is restricted to those purposes. (If Canon Medical Systems should ever desire to use personal data for purposes other than those specified, it will inform individuals of the additional purposes. All persons may refuse to consent to the use of their personal data for such additional purposes.)

Anyone who does not wish to provide Canon Medical Systems with personal data can withhold consent, though doing so may prevent access to certain services that Canon Medical Systems provides. 2) Non-Disclosure to Third Parties

In principle, Canon Medical Systems does not disclose or provide personal data to third parties, except in the following circumstances.

1. When express consent to do so is received from the person concerned.

2. When an inquiry concerning a product or service can be more appropriately handled by a Canon Medical Systems subsidiary, affiliate or distributor that is responsible for that product or service.

3. When Canon Medical Systems consigns such activities as promotional campaigns or competitions to other entities, in which cases personal data is covered by the terms of a non-disclosure agreement.

4. When it is necessary to complete settlement of payment for products ordered or services provided (e.g. providing information to financial institutions to facilitate credit card transactions, etc.)

5. When any judicial order, law, regulation or the like in any jurisdiction obliges Canon Medical Systems to disclose personal data.

6. When the business is succeeded to by another entity by way of a merger, corporate separation, transfer of business or otherwise.

3) Secure Management of Personal data

Canon Medical Systems manages personal data in an appropriate manner. Strict security measures ensure that personal data is securely saved and kept from loss, misuse or improper alteration.

(2) Inquiries

Individuals who wish to confirm their personal data should contact the section responsible for the services where they input the information or contact our Data Protection Officer (at dpo@sg.medical.canon). Canon Medical Systems will provide the personal data that it has when it has confirmed that the individual making the inquiry is the person concerned. This restriction is applied to prevent leakage of personal data to third parties. When personal data contains errors or needs to be updated, Canon Medical Systems will make the required changes, when it has confirmed that the individual making the request is the person concerned. (3) Handling of Personal data of Children under Age 16

Canon Medical Systems exercises the greatest possible caution to protect the privacy of children. Children under 18 years old are requested to provide personal data only after obtaining the consent of a parent or guardian.

(4) Use of Cookies, Web Beacons and Other Technologies

"Cookies" are small packets of information that Web servers transmit to visitors' or users' browsers for the effective operation of the Internet. Canon Medical Systems may use cookies to customize or personalize Web sites in order to better meet your individual expectations or requirements, and to improve the contents of Web sites or the types of services provided. Browsers can be set to refuse cookies or to provide a warning whenever cookies are being received. However, computers that are set to disable or refuse cookies will not be able to make use of useful functions, such as site personalization. By accessing and/or using our websites, you consent to the collection of your personal information using cookies for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy.


"Web beacons" or "Clear GIF" is an invisible GIF that tells us how many visitors visited the page or access certain contents. Canon Medical Systems may also use these Web Beacons or other technologies to tailor the site to provide better customer service. These Web Beacons often work in conjunction with cookies but browsers can be set to refuse cookies or to provide warning whenever cookies are being received. Web beacons will still detect visits to these pages but we do not use this technology to access personal data.

1. This statement is only applicable to Canon Medical Systems Asia Pte Ltd and does not apply to subsidiaries and affiliate of Canon Medical Systems in Japan and elsewhere. Please contact each entity for details of its own privacy program.  
2. Canon Medical Systems strictly observes all applicable Singapore laws regarding the handling of all personal data that it receives.
3. Canon Medical Systems may revise this Privacy Policy on the Web in order to better protect data or in accordance with changes in the relevant Singapore laws.
4. Canon Medical Systems cannot be held responsible for the security of your personal data on other Web sites that are linked to our Web site.

Communication with, reporting to, inquiries into or other contact with competent governmental authorities required for the execution of business
